Bavaria and Southern Germany

Bavaria (Bayern in German) is Germany's southernmost and largest region and was its own kingdom until 1918. Even today Bavarians consider themselves Bavarian first and German second. Today's Bavaria is still a storybook land of fairytale castles and snow capped mountains. This tour will introduce you to the beautiful natural landscape, villages of half-timber houses, and the always fun beer gardens. We will also venture outside of the state of Bavaria to visit the forever romantic cities of Heidelberg, Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, and Innsbruck, Austria.

Tour Dates: October 10, 2010 - October 17, 2010 - 7 nights, 8 days plus departure day.
[If you are taking an overnight flight (most from the U.S. and Canada are), you will actually leave on October 9th]

Please be aware that although this tour will take place in October, it will not be during Oktoberfest which ends October 3rd, 2010.

Tour Price: $1,529 - land only. Price includes all taxes and fees, 7 nights lodging in perfectly located premier hotels, coach transportation, airport transfers, all breakfasts, one lunch, five dinners, and much more (see below).

Price is per person based on two people sharing a room. Single supplement is available, please contact us for information. Airfare not included in price.

Group Rate: If you are a group of 6 or more you are eligible for a discount of $50 per person. Please Contact us for details.

What you get for you're money:

- Better Hotel Location – We want you to be able to explore on your own and you can’t do that from a hotel outside of the city. On this tour we stay in central Munich (very near the famous Hofbrauhaus), central Heidelberg, and within the walls of Rothenburg and the small town of Oberammergau. There will be very little to see on this tour that is not within easy walking distance.

- Personal Service – For this, like all of our tours, we handle every aspect of the trip personally. From planning to customer service to leading the tour, you deal with the same people. This allows us to respond quicker and be flexible with changes and allows you to get to know us and feel more comfortable.

- Experienced Guide, Guaranteed – We are in our 10th year of guiding tours and we run each one personally. Traveling with another company leaves your vacation in the hands of several guides with widely varying levels of quality and experience. There’s no risk with Great Explorations Tours because you know what you’re getting every single time.

Great hotels, hometown service, and experience; you can’t find that with another tour company.

Day 0 (Saturday, October 9, 2010) - Depart from USA

Today you'll be leaving the USA for Munich, Germany. We refer to it as day zero because you won't actually arrive in Germany until the next day. Enjoy your flight and try to get some sleep.

Day 1 (Sunday, October 10, 2010) - Arrive in Munich

Welcome to Germany! Today you arrive in the Bavarian capital of Munich. You may wish to stroll around the lovely Altstadt (Old Town, pictured) or perhaps stop in a beer hall or two. Tonight we'll enjoy a welcome dinner so we can all finally meet.

Hotel: Hotel Concorde - A nice, pleasant hotel right in the heart of Munich. Within 4 blocks you will find the Hofbrauhaus, Marienplatz, Residenz, and everything else you’ll want to see. (link opens in a new window).

Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 2 (Monday, October 11, 2010) - Heidelberg

Leaving Munich (for now) we travel to the romantic old city of Heidelberg (pictured). Your guide will lead you on a brief tour of the city and its picturesque fortress, church, plaza, and old bridge.

Hotel: Crowne Plaze Heidelberg - A wonderful, modern-style hotel just outside of the compact pedestrian area of Heidelberg, within an easy walk to the Castle. (link opens in a new window).

Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 (Tuesday, October 12, 2010) - Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber

Today we see a truly remarkable town. Rothenburg (pictured) is a completely walled city that looks almost exactly today as it did in the middle ages. It may be primarily a tourist attraction today, but it is still a must see. You won't soon forget the half-timber houses and wonderful wall and towers. Make sure you have enough room on your camera for Rothenburg.

Hotel: Hotel Eisenhut - This small, old hotel is constantly rated one of the best in Germany. In addition, it is located just off of the main square within the medieval walls of Rothenberg. (link opens in a new window).

Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 (Wednesday, October 13, 2010) - The German Alps via Wieskirche

We journey south, returning to Bavaria, and head toward the mountains. The gorgeous, often snow-capped Alps make up the German-Austrian border and our base for the next two nights is nestled deep amongst them in the town of Oberammergau.

Before we arrive at our hotel, we will stop at the wonderful Wieskirche. Following the sight of tears on a statue of the Scourged Saviour in 1738, a small wooden chapel was built. The small chapel proved to be no match for the swarms of pilgrims visiting the site and in the late 18th century, the rococo masterpiece that stands today was built. The Wieskirche that you will see is still a pilgrimage point as well as a beautiful church in a serene, secluded location.

Arriving in Oberammergau, you'll see a beautiful mountain town with it's mural fronted building and towering peaks. The town is perhaps best known as the site of the Passion Play put on every 10 years by the townspeople. Although 2010 is a Passion Play year, it will be over before we arrive.

Hotel: Alte Post - If you’ve ever imagined what an Alpine hotel would look like, this is it. A quaint, wonderfully decorated chalet in the heart of Oberammergau. (link opens in a new window).

Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 5 (Thursday, October 14, 2010) - Innsbruck, Austria

Today we cross into Austria for the day to visit a small city in the mountains that has hosted the Olympics not once, but twice. Innsbruck (pictured) is a charming little city with amazing views that we're sure you'll love.

Hotel: Alte Post - Same as day 4 above (link opens in a new window).

Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 (Friday, October 15, 2010) - Munich via Neuschwanstein

Turning back toward Munich, we stop to tour the most recognizable sight in Germany, Neuschwanstein Castle (pictured). Build by the "mad" King, Ludwig II, Neuschwanstein is said to be the inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty's Castle. True or not, it is a fantastical, romantic place that is one of a kind.

In the evening, we arrive in Munich again where you'll have a chance to enjoy some of the nightlife of the Bavarian capital. Perhaps a stop at the famous Hofbrauhaus is in order?

Hotel: Hotel Concorde - Same as first night. (link opens in a new window).

Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 7 (Saturday, October 16, 2010) - Munich

An optional walking tour of the sights of central Munich will be led by your guides today with the remainder of the day open for you to enjoy. Your guides will be happy to help direct you to anything you may want to do on your last night in Germany.

Hotel: Hotel Concorde - Same as first night. (link opens in a new window).

Meals Included: Breakfast
